Sub human teleology

It is possible that God has created the world for a purpose to which we contribute, more or less knowingly.  It is certain (well reasonably certain) that most human beings spend their time deliberately making choices with the belief that they will lead to a better situation in the future.

Where does this leave sentient beings, like squirrels, who do things, like burying nuts, which appears to be valuable to the squirrel later in it’s life, even though we have no idea what the squirrel understands of the future.

Is the individual squirrel in fact advancing the cause of squirrel kind by hiding nuts all over the place for her relatives to find?  Or even more foresightedly planting trees for her great great grand squirrels?

Do squirrels know what they are doing?  Long term plans, or just how to get this acorn into the ground?  Or are they part of some divine plan acting on a long term teleological instinct.
