About PSE(LG)

“Philosophy is the science which considers truth”, Aristotle
“The point of philosophy is to start with something so simple as not to seem worth stating, and to end with something so paradoxical that no one will believe it.”, Bertrand Russell

Ben Basing informally chairs the evening covering philosophers and philosophies more or less at random but themes tend to develop and ideas are often continued from one session to the next.  If you have an idea you would like to present or an argument to start contributions please get in touch.

A Bit Above Pub Philosophy

At the beginning of 2017 the Philosophical Society of England is thinking of reorganising so that the subscription can be eliminated and the current paper and ink journal will be published on line.  As chair (not president!) of the society and an enthusiastic pub philosopher I am keen to support this move to offer publication to philosophers ‘a bit above pub philosophy’, both in the physical sense of meeting in a quieter room above the bar and academically in that we would expect more rigour that is generally found downstairs.  Of course meetings in the bar will continue as an introduction and to provide the social contact we always have.

The journal aims to fill a gap between essays written for a courses and papers aimed at professional philosophers.  Journal submissions should discuss philosophical issues in an accessible way, not laden with academic detail with notes kept to a minimum, and no more than 3,000 words to a paper.  If you have such a piece or, like me, look for an incentive to prepare one, maybe you would consider submitting it to Alan Brown alanbrown236@googlemail.com for possible publication in the 2016 paper edition of The Philosopher or to ben.basing@yahoo.co.uk as a trial of web publication of papers for possible discussion in, or above, a bar.
